The only thing is, how do you know exactly which feeds and supplements can be combined to make a balanced diet that will meet your horse's specific requirements?

Here at Equilize Horse Nutrition we have identified this difficulty in the Australian Horse Industry and have developed Equilize - the diet formulation and nutrition information program for Australian horses.


Formulating high performance diets for horses has been a frustrating process of rough calculations and guess work, meaning underperformance, injury, deficiencies, toxicities, overfeeding and inefficiency are rife in Australia. What Is EQUILIZE?

Equilize is a computer software package that allows you to quickly and easily develop balanced diets that are customised to your specific horses nutritional needs. The Equilize software contains an extensive information package that will provide you with valuable information to assist you in formulating the best possible diet for your horse(s).

Two versions of Equilize are available, the Professional version and the Pony Club, Pleasure and Light Competition version. Both packages are user friendly, even if you do not regularly use a computer. Customer assistance is also available via email support or a 1300 number call. Equilize has been developed using the most up-to-date scientific information available, to give you the ultimate edge over your competitors.

Frequently Asked Questions ...

  1. What is the difference between the Professional Version of Equilize and the Pony Club, Pleasure and Light Competition Version of Equilize? The programs are the same in every aspect EXCEPT the types of horses each program can balance diets for is different. The professional version will allow you to balance diets for breeding horses, growing horses, stallions, spelling and aged horses as well as for horses in light, moderate and heavy work. The Pony Club, Pleasure and Light Competition Version of the program allows you to balance diets for Spelling and Aged horses as well as horses in light and moderate work.
  2. Do I have to get a pin number to use the program? Yes, you will need a pin number to access the program once it is installed on your computer. Once you recieve your software and install it on your computer follow the simple directions given to retrieve your pin.
  3. How many pin numbers are issued per program? One pin number is issued per program purchased. If you would like multiple pin numbers issued please call Nerida to discuss your requirements.
  4. What does the '12 Month Licence' mean for the professional version? The Professional version of the program is licenced to you on a 12 monthly basis. At the conclusion of your 12 month licence you will be given the option to relicence. At this time we will ensure your program and feed database are up to date and provide any new updates. If you choose not to relicence the program will simply stop working on your computer. You can also relicence at any time you choose (so you may choose to leave you subscription for a couple of years then re-licence the program for a further 12 months).
  5. Is the Pony Club, Pleasure and Light Competition Version licenced? No, it is currently on a purchase now and you have it for life system.It may change to a licence sytem in the future.
  6. How much does it cost to re-licence the Professional version? The re-licencing fee is currently set at $66 for 12 months (or 18 cents a day).
  7. How are the horses nutrient requirements calculated by the program? The program calculates a horses nutrient requirements using the most up-to-date information available. NRC requirements are not used.
  8. Are any updates for Equilize provided? Yes, feed database updates are provided to ensure that the feeds and supplements contained in the database are current. Updates will be provided at least once per 12 months and more frequently if necessary.
  9. Does it cost anything for the feed database updates? No, these are all provided as part of the service.
  10.  Can I pay using a direct bank deposit (EFT)? Certainly. If you wish to pay using EFT please contact Nerida (nerida@equilize.com.au) for account details.
  11. What happens if my computer breaks down and I need a new pin number? You will need to contact Equilize Horse Nutrition and explain your circumstances and pay for the difference between the time remaining on your current licence and the new 12-month licence you will be provided with when a new pin number is issued.

    Likewise, a horse receiving a balanced diet is more likely to have healthy hooves, reducing its need for any intensive farrier attention and increasing the amount of time you can reasonably expect a set of shoes to remain safely intact.

How Does EQUILIZE Work?

The way Equilize works is simple. You enter you horse's details into the program, specifying its age, bodyweight and activity (for example 11 month pregnant mare; Figure 1) and Equilize will then calculate your horses requirements for energy, protein and the major vitamins and minerals.

Once you have your horses details entered, you choose the ingredients you wish to feed to your horse from the programs extensive feed ingredients database (Figure 2). There are over 200 ingredients for you to choose from in the programs database that are grouped into forage/roughage, grain/by-product, commercial product or supplement categories. The feeds database provides you with the nutrient specifications for almost every feedstuff available to you in Australia. You are also able to enter as many of your own new ingredients to the database as you like.

Once you have selected your desired ingredients and entered the amount of each ingredient your horse will be consuming each day, you can use the easy to read graph (Figure 3) and table (Figure 4) to fine tune the amounts or types of ingredients you use to meet your horse's specific requirements.

Which Horses Will EQUILIZE Allow Me to Create Diets For?

The EQUILIZE program will allow you to create diets for all classes of horses including ponies undertaking various activities. The activities catered for in the Equilize program include: the idle or spelling horse; horses in light, medium or heavy work or training (this category also caters for growing horses in work or training); pregnant mares; lactating mares; breeding and non-breeding stallions; growing horses and aged horses.

Equilize for Pony Club, Pleasure and Light Competition Horses will allow you to formulate diets for spelling and aged horses and ponies as well as for horses and ponies in light to moderate work.

Equilize will allow you to balance energy, protein, lysine, calcium, phosphorous, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine, iron, sodium, chloride, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A, E, B1, B2, Niacin, B5, B6 and Folate in your horse's diet.

What Sort Of Nutrition Information Does The Program Contain?

The Equilize CD-ROM contains over 200 easy to read nutrition information files that will help you understand many aspects of horse nutrition. The information provided covers several areas including: general aspects and rules for feeding horses; the gastrointestinal tract; the functions of various nutrients including energy, protein and the major vitamins and minerals; and tips for feeding different classes of horses including idle horses, horses in work or training, pregnant and lactating mares, breeding stallions, growing horses and aged horses.
